January 18 and 19, "The Ties That Bind" A new production from the Conservatory of Dance. Music and dance tell the story of three girls separated from their parents in New York City. A performance the whole family will enjoy. All tickets $10.00. Show will be held at Manistee High School Auditorium. Matinee @ 2:00 pm and evening @ 7:30. January 28, Manistee Art Institute Annual Dinner, Monday, 6:00 pm. It's that time of the year again when the members of the MAI and their friends gather together to celebrate last year's achievements, announce upcoming events for 2008, and present their VIVA award for the previous year's outstanding volunteer/volunteers. The dinner/meeting will be held at the Tuscan Grille, 312 River Street, in Manistee, and begins at 6:00 pm, with dinner served at 6:30 pm. The total cost is $20.00 per person, which includes entree', salad, beverage, tax and tip. There will be a cash bar. Entree' choices are: Lasagna with Garlic Bread; Manicotti with Garlic Bread; 6 oz. Top Sirloin with Potato; or Honey Glazed Grilled Salmon with Potato. If you plan to attend, call the MAI office at 231-723-2682 by January 24th to leave a message, including your name, the number of people attending, and menu selections.

March 15, Annual St. Urho’s Day Bake Sale, Kaleva Art Gallery, downtown Kaleva, 10:00 am-4:00 pm. (St. Urho’s Day is March 16th, but the bake sale will be held on the 15th this year.) St. Urho is the legendary hero who drove the grasshoppers our of Finland and saved the grape crop. Be sure to see the giant metal sculpture of the grasshopper created by Brethren High School Students on the walkway along Wuoksi Street. December 7, Open House, Kaleva Art Gallery, Noon-5:00 pm. The Kaleva Art Gallery will host an open house on Sunday, in the historic drug store building, downtown Kaleva. Arts and crafts demonstrations and refreshments will be served. From Manistee take US 31 north to Nine Mile Road east.
December 7, Christmas Celebration, Kaleva Bottle House, noon-4:00 pm. The Kaleva Bottle House Museum will be open on Sunday, December 7, from noon to 5:00 pm for a special Christmas celebration. Traditional decorations, the Finnish Heaven, music and refreshments will make this a memorable visit. The Bottle House is located at the corner of Wuoksi and Kauko streets in Kaleva.
December 21, Annual Lighting of the Cemetery on Winter Solstice, Kaleva. Starting at 4:00 pm on Sunday, over six hundred luminaries are placed on graves in the Kaleva cemetery to honor loved ones. There is a soup supper and short program at Kaleva’s Bethany Lutheran Church at 5:30 pm. All are welcome.
