January 1 through February 1 "The Whimsical Jamey Barnard" The Healing Arts Gallery at West Shore Hospital in Manistee is hosting an exhibit of the work of local artist Jamey Barnard, who is known for his whimsical and engaging art. Jamey's art work is bursting with color, and will brighten even the dreariest of winter days.

March 12, Brethren Heritage Association monthly meeting, 7:00 pm. Visitors welcome. The BHA meets at the Brethren Museum, corner of Cart and Amick Streets, accessible either from Coates Highway/Brethren Blvd, or from High Bridge Road in Brethren. The BHA has moved a store and an ice house, formerly at Red Bridge site, to Brethren, and united them to form the present museum. A Tool Shed has recently been built that houses tools of an earlier era. A second annual all day fifth grade field trip for the KND School District is planned for late April, where students visit sites and 'early personalities' of Brethren. Mid-March, "Oh, The Places We Go!" The Healing Arts Gallery presents an exhibit in conjunction with the Crystal Lake Art Center in Benzie County. The exhibit features work from northern Michigan artists who have been inspired by their travels around the world. The Healing Arts Gallery is located in the West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.

March 17, Annual St. Urho's Day Bake Sale, Kaleva Art Gallery, downtown Kaleva, 10:00 am-4:00 pm. (St. Urho's Day is March 16th, but the bake sale will be held on the 17th this year.) St. Urho is the legendary hero who drove the grasshoppers out of Finland and saved the grape crop. Be sure to see the giant metal sculpture of the grasshopper created by Brethren High School students on the walkway along Wuoksi Street. April 21, Byron and Tim Joseph, Benefit Performance for the Dickson School Cultural Center, 8:00 pm, Brown Township Hall, 8233 Coates Highway, Manistee. Donation requested at the door. Tim and his cousin, Byron Joseph, grew up together in Onekama in a family that encouraged their music and passed down some of their favorite tunes, including “Johnstown Flood” and “Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley.” The way they describe their music is, “most of the songs we play are older than we are.” With Byron on guitar and Tim on dobro, banjo, fiddle and guitar, the duo bring an eclectic mix of styles and sounds to the stage. This event is sponsored by the Spirit of the Woods Music Association. Donations will be used to assist in the renovation of the 1922 Dickson School in Brethren, to convert it into a community cultural center.
April 21, A Special Pairing of Art & Wine, River Street Gallery, 6:00 pm, 384 River Street, Manistee. An event of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Manistee County, this reception is to benefit their local scholarship program. Co-hosted by Moving Spirits, a local fine wine and art shop, and River Street Gallery. Featured artists in attendance will be Phil Joseph, whose paintings honor the beauty of Northern Michigan, and Mike McDonnell, whose watercolor paintings are pure genius. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Moving Spirits, to compliment the wine selections. River Street Gallery will be donating 20% of gallery purchases that evening to the scholarship fund. He works in oil and also incorporates many objects into his work. His work can be realist, abstract, freestanding or framed. June 23, Strawberry Social with Homemade Ice Cream, Fun, and Entertainment, Marilla Museum and Pioneer Place. The five museum spaces will be open 1:00-5:00 pm, and music, folk dancing, and food service will be from 2:00-4:00 pm. Enjoy homemade ice cream, locally grown strawberries, and shortcake. Special music and entertainment throughout the day will be provided by our multi-talented local treasure, Carol Voights. Carol, former director of the Manistee Symphony Orchestra Chorus, is a talented vocalist, proficient on a variety of musical instruments, and has a unique flair for using both folklore and music to interpret history. Carol will do two 45-minute sets, the first entertaining in and around the Pioneer buildings with traditional folk music. The second set will take place inside the Hall, where Carol will play and “call” traditional dance tunes, and you can dance! In addition, Ann Bowers will do a historical interpretation of pioneer cooking, over an open fire. Ann volunteers her special art at Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinac City. She will come complete with costuming and special cooking utensils. Admission is by Free Will Donation, to support the museum. In September and October the Depot will be open on Saturdays from 12:00-4:00 pm. There will be special programs on September 16, 29 and October 20 related to the history of the railroad in Manistee County. Historical demonstrations and music will be part of these events starting at 4:00 pm.

October 6, Jeremy Kittel and Band, 7:30 pm, Ramsdell Theatre, Manistee. The Ramsdell Cultural Series is pleased to announce the performance of this nationally renowned fiddler. Jeremy Kittle (JeremyKittel.com) is an outstanding folk artist (fiddle) and graduate of the University of Michigan. His band is made up of the following talented musicians: Kyle Sanna (guitar), Bodek Janke (percussion), and Andrew Kratzat (bass). Jeremy Kittel performed at the Ramsdell in 2003 during the Centennial celebration and was very well received. Tickets for Jeremy Kittel will be $15 and will be available at the Manistee City Hall. October 13, Autumn Fest, Marilla Museum and Pioneer Place, 2:00-6:00 pm. This family-oriented event features several enjoyable activities such as an apple-butter making demonstration; live music by the group "Malarky," who perform a mix of Celtic, French Canadian, Scandinavian, German, and American traditional music; a blacksmithing demonstration by metal artist Darla Sealander; a one-man drama "Johnny Appleseed" by Don Stroup; a yarn spinning demonstration by Lori Smith; and much more. All five museum spaces will participate in an open house, showing off the fully furnished "Logger/Trapper Cabin", a hand hewed, furnished two-story 1870 pioneer log house, a 1900 barn, and a very complete museum in the basement of the Marilla Township Hall. Food will be available throughout the event, purchased separately from the event charge, which is $6 per adult, $3 per child over 12, and free to children 12 and under. Chuck Brodsky is one of North America's most highly regarded singer/songwriters. Brodsky has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Ireland for 12 years; playing at folk festivals such as Tonder in Denmark, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Kerrville, Philadelphia, and Strawberry, as well as the Lincoln Center "Out of Doors" series in New York. He's appeared with the likes of John Hartford, Tim O'Brien, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, Pete Seeger, Greg Brown, Tom Paxton and Christine Lavin. December 2, Annual Christmas Open House, Kaleva Art Gallery, noon-5:00 pm. The Kaleva Art Gallery celebrates 10 years of business this year. Located at the corner of Aura and Wuoksi streets in downtown Kaleva, this is an arts and crafts gallery with many local artists' work for sale. Finnish glass and souvenirs, too.

December 4, Olde Tyme Craft Nite, 7:00 pm, Brethren Museum, corner of Cart and Amick, Brethren, adjacent to Lake Elinor park. This event is held the first Tuesday of each month. December 8, Open House, Kaleva Art Gallery, 10:00 am-4:00 pm. The Kaleva Art Gallery celebrates 10 years with an open house on Saturday, December 8, 10:00-4:00 in the historic drug store building, downtown Kaleva. Arts and crafts demonstrations, refreshments, and anniversary sales will be part of the celebration. From Manistee take US 31 north to Nine Mile Road east.
December 8, Christmas Celebration, Kaleva Bottle House, noon-4:00 pm. The Kaleva Bottle House Museum will be open on Saturday, December 8, from noon to 4 o'clock for a special Christmas celebration. Traditional decorations, the Finnish Heaven, music and refreshments will make this a memorable visit. The Bottle House is located at the corner of Wuoksi and Kauko streets in Kaleva.
December 10, Brethren Heritage Association monthly meeting, 7:00 pm. Visitors welcome. The BHA meets at the Brethren Museum, corner of Cart and Amick Streets, accessible either from Coates Highway/Brethren Blvd, or from High Bridge Road in Brethren. See March 12 listing for details.
December 21, Annual Lighting of the Cemetery on Winter Solstice, Kaleva. Starting at 4 o'clock over six hundred luminaries are placed on graves in the Kaleva cemetery to honor loved ones. There is a soup supper and short program at Kaleva’s Bethany Lutheran Church at 5:30 pm. All are welcome.
